Link building is one of the most overlooked aspects of SEO. The premise behind link building is simple. You put a link (like a “click here” button) to your website on another website. The search engines will see that this website has your link listed. Depending upon the rank of that website, you will receive more “link juice” from the search engines.

Websites are ranked by Google. Google receives over seventy percent of all the internet searches. Google ranks each website according to its popularity, relevance, and current SEO practices. When you can link your website to another website that is ranked higher than yours, it will help to raise your rankings on the search engine results pages (SERP’s).

There are a couple of different types of links. The first are one way links. These are links to your website that you place on another webpage. The effectiveness of such a link is based upon the number of people that visit the website with your link. Your link will not bring you traffic if no one clicks on it.

An example of a one way link is a paid directory. These directories are like the yellow pages. You can search through a listing of websites to find what you are looking for. It’s an index of web pages. There are many link farms online as well. These are nothing but pages and pages of links. In order for a link to help your website, it must be places on a relevant site. A link farm will not help your ranking; in fact, it could get you penalized by the search engines.

Reciprocal links create a full circle. Your link gets placed on a website. Now you place a link on your website that will take visitors back to where your link is. While these types of links can quickly help you in the search engine results pages, you need to exercise a little caution.

Make sure you are only linking to websites that are relevant in some way to your own. While relevance can encompass many things, use common sense. If you sell books on the solar system, you probably don’t want to link to a site that sells hair care products.
