As a parent, it is imperative that you closely monitor your child's education. However, there are also things you should avoid as a parent. It is never easy knowing what is best for the future of your child’s education, but some mistakes can have dire effects. You want to insure you get it right because your child only gets one shot at doing it right.
Knowing what is best for your child can be very frustrating. This is especially true when it comes to your child's education. Everyone knows the simple things, like teaching your child to read are imperative. However, it is never easy to know which things to avoid or what can be a detrimental mistake. Consider the following five things that can actually cause damage to your child’s educational process.
1. Don't set the bar too high. Many parents today expect their children to participate in lots of extracurricular activities and still maintain perfect grades. For some children, this means hours of after school activities, followed by even more time doing home work. Remember, even though education is important, it is also important to let your child enjoy being a child.
2. Lower the stress level. Many parents put so much emphasis on education that children are stressed out by middle school. This is not healthy. Stress can actually cause many health problems or disorders. You have to find a healthy balance of imparting the importance of education without making it the end of the world when a grade is not perfect.
3. Don't belittle your children. Always use positive words and attitudes when working with your children. Some parents think that making a child feel bad will motivate them to work harder. While this may be true for a short time, most children usually get to a point where they simply give up. You could end up with worse results down the road when the child rebels against this behavior.
4. Don't compare your children. Just because one of your children is good at math doesn’t mean they all will be. Children are individuals and each will have his or her strengths and weaknesses. As a parent, you are probably not excellent at everything you attempt. Your children shouldn't be expected to be.
5. Don't give up! It is never easy raising children, but you can’t give up. If your child is not performing well, the best thing you can do is be supportive and be there for them. If your child thinks you no longer care, they won't care either.
The best thing you can do as a parent is be there for your children. They will face times when things are very hard, and they will need to take breaks along the way to enjoy being children. |
